Thirty metres of Irish stone rose above Glendalough, ringing the valley before churches had spires. The tower at Kinneigh broke the circular rule with a hexagonal base in 1014, while Kilmacduagh leans nearly two metres from vertical yet still stands. Doors sat high not to keep out invaders but to keep the wind from tearing the wall apart. Monks climbed ladders into bell chambers where wood floors shook under their feet, then vanished when the towers fell silent.
