Six decades of storms have not erased the shallow dish of earth beside Yarnbury Castle, though men have forgotten the name of the dead beneath it. The barrow still marks a Bronze Age choice: this particular spot was worthy of honour, and the hillfort above watched the same valley for generations afterwards. To stand beside it is to touch the patience of Wiltshire, where even oblivion must be dug through before it can be believed.
