Overview
The Rose Ness stone beacon was raised in 1867 as a daylight mark on the Orkney clifftop. A separate light beacon followed to the south-west in 1905, but the earlier rubble tower and its timber cross remain beside the modern lighthouse group as evidence of navigation before electric lights.
Why it was built
This beacon was erected to give sailors a mark they could see on the Rose Ness cliff during daylight. Its position above Holm Sound helped vessels recognise the headland near routes leading towards Scapa Flow. It worked by shape and height rather than by carrying the later flashing lamp.
People and work
The surviving public records date the structure to 1867 but do not name its designer, mason or paying body. Builders used rubble stone to make a tall fixed mark and placed a large wooden cross on top, creating a simple outline that stood out against land and sky.
How it changed
A cast-iron light beacon was built separately to the south-west in 1905, and a modern lighthouse later replaced that light on almost the same spot. The 1867 day beacon was not turned into either of those structures. Keeping their positions separate prevents the older stone marker from receiving the later lighthouse’s story.
What survives
The rubble-built stone beacon and its large timber cross remain north-east of the working lighthouse. The two can be seen from each other across the clifftop. National records treat them as a connected group of navigation aids while also giving the older beacon its own place number and exact position.
Why it mattered
Rose Ness shows the step from a marker useful only when it could be seen to a nearby lamp that also guided travel in darkness and poor light. Survival of both positions makes that change visible. The stone beacon remains valuable because it was not simply replaced or absorbed into the newer tower.
