Roman Gate Tower, Exeter and South Gate, Exeter green plaque

This green commemorative plaque records: Demarcated on the pavement to the right of this notice is the foundation of the Roman Gate Tower flanking the South Gate to the City. The gate was rebuilt in medieval times and then used as a debtors prison. It was demolished in A.D. 1819.

The Roman Gate Tower marked the southern entrance to Exeter during the Roman occupation, serving as a defensive structure and later repurposed through medieval times until its demolition in 1819.
