What is recorded here
Nottingham Castle rises above rock-cut houses that cling to the southern slope like forgotten teeth. The list protects them, but it does not invite anyone inside. Whether neighbours once lived in those dark rooms or soldiers watched the valley remains uncertain. The castle still stands, proud and visible, while the smaller houses wait beneath it, refusing to be forgotten.
The National Heritage List for England records Rock cut houses S of Nottingham Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
