The Brough of Birsay is a sea stack and coastal rock feature composed mainly of Old Red Sandstone, dating back to the Devonian period, around 400 to 360 million years ago. It formed through volcanic activity and subsequent erosion, and is notable for its historical and archaeological significance, including the remains of a medieval chapel and possible early Christian settlements.
