Overview
Roche Abbey was founded in 1147 for Cistercian monks in a limestone valley. Church, cloister, water systems and estates relied on lay brothers and tenants as well as prayer; dissolution stripped roofs before later landscaping reshaped the ruins.

Richard de Busli and Richard FitzTurgis founded the abbey, whose builders laid out church and ranges around controlled water.

Monks worshipped and administered property; lay brothers, tenants and servants farmed, quarried and maintained the community.
Damage, loss and survival
Dissolution emptied the abbey and stripped material; Capability Brown later altered the ground around the ruins.
