This bronze commemorative plaque records: This House was purchased 1902 by Lieut. Col. Robert W. Shipway .V. D. of Grove House Chiswick, in order to save it from being demolished, and by restoring the Building, has preserved it to the Nation and the Art World, in Memory of the genius that once lived and worked within its walls.
Robert W. Shipway.V.D. was a British army officer and art collector who saved and restored a house associated with an artistic genius, thereby preserving it for national and cultural heritage.
