This bronze commemorative plaque records: "For God and St. Andrew" Robert The Bruce King of Scots planted his standard near this spot when the Scottish patriots under his command vanquished the army of Edward II of England at the Battle of Bannockburn 24th June 1314 "We fight not for glory nor for wealth, nor honour but only and alone we fight for freedom which no good man surrenders but with his life"

Robert the Bruce was King of Scots from 1306 to 1329, renowned for leading Scotland to victory against England at Bannockburn in 1314, securing Scottish independence; Edward II of England, who ruled from 1307 to 1327, is remembered for his military defeats, including Bannockburn, and eventual deposition by his wife and her lover.
