Robert Taylor, a bank clerk from Westbury, was posthumously awarded the George Cross for attempting to thwart armed robbers at Lloyd's Bank in 1950, sacrificing his life in the process. His act of bravery during the robbery has made him a local hero and an example of courage under extreme duress.
