Robert Stephenson black plaque

This black commemorative plaque records: Robert Stephenson 1803-1859 Engineer lived here from his marriage in 1829 until he removed to London in 1833. During this time he designed and constructed the “Rocket” and later the “Planet”, the prototype for more than a century of steam locomotive development. Robert Stephenson, son of George Stephenson, was a pioneering British civil and mechanical engineer; he significantly advanced railway technology by designing the "Rocket" and "Planet," which set the standard for steam locomotives throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
