This blue commemorative plaque records: Professor Robert Newstead (1859 - 1947) Naturalist & Archaeologist First Curator of the Grosvenor Museum, and then Professor of Entomology at Liverpool University. He led excavations in Chester for thirty years, including the Roman barracks on Deanery Field and the Amphitheatre.
Professor Robert Newstead was a prominent naturalist and archaeologist known for his extensive work leading excavations in Chester, particularly the Roman barracks and Amphitheatre, and served as the first Curator of the Grosvenor Museum before becoming Professor of Entomology at Liverpool University.
