This black commemorative plaque records: In a house on this site between 1655 and 1668 lived Robert Boyle. Here he discovered Boyle's Law and made experiments with an air pump designed by his assistant Robert Hooke, inventor, scientist and architect who made a microscope and thereby first identified the living cell
Robert Hooke was a polymath who contributed significantly to science through inventions like the microscope, which enabled the discovery of cells. Robert Boyle, a key figure in the scientific revolution, formulated Boyle's Law and pioneered modern experimental scientific methods, both lived and collaborated on experiments here between 1655 and 1668.
