This bronze commemorative plaque records: The Royal Aeronautical Society. Aeronautical Heritage Award. Robert Blackburn, 1895-1955. Operated the Blackburn Flying School at Filey between March 1911 and September 1912. He conducted extensive flight trials from this beach with aircraft of his own design from a dedicated hangar and slipway. He later formed the Blackburn Aeroplane and Motor Co. Ltd. Recorded plaque organisation: Royal Aeronautical Society.
Robert Blackburn (1895-1955) was a pioneering aviator who operated an early flying school in Filey and conducted significant flight trials with his own aircraft designs; he later founded the Blackburn Aeroplane and Motor Co. Ltd., contributing notably to British aviation development.
