Road

The site (L 21.31m min.; Wth 1.1m; D 0.12m) is orientated ENE-WSW and consists of layers of sand, gravel, stone, brushwood and timbers overlain by a flagstone walking-surface. This site is likely to represent a number of phases or episodes of construction as each layer was separated by 0.07-0.18m of undisturbed peat. The basal layer (Wth 0.7m; D 0.07m) was predominantly of sand and some small flagstones (diam. 0.3m max.) set in loosely compacted gravel. Separated by 0.1-0.15 of peat, the overlying deposit (Wth 1.87m; D 0.09m) appears to form a substructure of a parallel runners orientated NW-SE set 1.4m apart, with a number of other runners between these. Other pieces of roundwood, brushwood and a number of split timbers were dispersed around this. Located 0.18m above this was a compact layer of brushwood (Wth 1.9m; D 0.12m), longitudinally laid and up to three pieces deep. This wood was of mixed species with evidence of branching. Approximately 0.17m of undisturbed peat separated this material from the upper surface (Wth 1.1m; D 0.12m) of sub-angular sandstone and limestone flagstones (diam. 0.15-0.55m). A portion of a morticed plank was also present. This site may also form part of SMR OF015-270----, located approximately 204m to the S.
