Ringwork in Castle Wood, immediately south west of Little Knowle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Castle Wood holds a ringwork south west of Little Knowle, marked as a scheduled monument though its builders and purpose have vanished. The wood may have hidden the structure from nearby eyes, giving the site a quiet life separate from the bustle of Tunbridge Wells. Whether it watched a road, defended a family or marked a boundary remains unknown. The list preserves the shape; the story has gone missing.
The National Heritage List for England records Ringwork in Castle Wood, immediately south west of Little Knowle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Built in the late 12th or early 13th century, likely by a local landowner or noble during the post-Conquest period, the ringwork is important as a rare surviving example of a defensive earthwork associated with the medieval landscape of south-west England.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
