Richhill Fortified House in Rich Hill OR Legacorry

Richhill Fortified House

What is recorded here

Richhill Fortified House stood in County Armagh during the seventeenth century, a rare surviving shape from a violent age. Its walls were built to keep out invaders, not to invite them in. The house may have smelled of wood smoke and fear, its windows narrow enough to aim arrows but tight enough to choke light. Strength and suffocation shared the same room.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as Richhill Fortified House. Recorded period: C17TH. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Richhill Fortified House, also known as Legacorry, was built in the 17th century, likely by a local landowner during the period of English and Scottish settlement in Ulster. It is remembered as an example of early colonial architecture and the expansion of fortified residences in Northern Ireland during the post-Plantation era.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
