Richard Talbot, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell, died in Limerick on 14 August 1691 after a lifetime of cavalry warfare, continental exile and Catholic patronage. He left behind a contested legacy: cunning courtier to some, loyal advocate for Irish Catholic gentry to others. His stroke came shortly before Jacobite defeat, freezing his ambition in a city still wounded by war.
