This brushed metal commemorative plaque records: Richmond Gaol. Richard & John Snell Protestant martyrs were imprisoned here 1558. Richard Snell was burnt at the stake nearby 9th September 1558. Accounts of their trials and deaths appear in Foxe's Book of Martyrs
Richard Snell and his brother John were English Protestant martyrs imprisoned at Richmond Gaol in 1558 during the Marian Persecutions; Richard was burnt at the stake for heresy, and their ordeal is documented in Foxe's Book of Martyrs.
