Led the first English Colony to settle in America 1585. Led Bideford's ships to fight the Spanish Armada 1588. Died a hero at the Battle of Flores 1591
Richard Grenville was an Elizabethan sea captain and colonizer who obtained a Royal Charter for Bideford in 1573 and led the first English colony to settle in America in 1585. He played a significant role in defending England against the Spanish Armada in 1588 and died heroically at the Battle of Flores in 1591.
