This yellow commemorative plaque records: Sir Richard Grenville born in a house on this site 15th June 1542. Obtained Royal Charter for Bideford 1573. Led the first English Colony to settle in America 1585. Led Bideford's ships to fight the Spanish Armada 1588. Died a hero at the Battle of Flores 1591
Richard Grenville was an Elizabethan sea captain and colonizer who obtained a Royal Charter for Bideford in 1573 and led the first English colony to settle in America in 1585. He played a significant role in defending England against the Spanish Armada in 1588 and died heroically at the Battle of Flores in 1591.
