Leased by Dr. Richard Bethell by 1800. His son, Richard, Lord Chancellor 1861 and created Lord Westbury. Owner Charles Timbrell, dyer, mid-late C19 Bradford UDC offices from 1911. Westbury House has historical significance due to its association with clothiers Matthew Smith and Joseph Phelps in the late 18th century, and it was the site of a riot by workers protesting against scribbling machines in 1791. The house later belonged to Dr. Richard Bethell, whose son became Lord Chancellor as Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury.
