Reid Antony Railton blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Reid Antony Railton 1895-1977 Educated at Rugby and Manchester University. From 1914 to 1924 assistant to J. G.P.Thomas at Leyland Motors Later Chief Engineer and Consultant at Thomson & Taylor he developed many cars including the Brooklands Riley, ERA and Railton. In 1929 he redesigned "Bluebird" for Sir Malcolm Campbell who raised theWorld Land Speed Record on three occasions. In 1932/3 he built the Napier Railton track car for John Cobb, forever holder of the Brooklands Lap Record at 143.44 mph. Also for John Cobb he designed the Land Speed Record car, which finally achieved a speed of 403 m.p.h.in 1947. He became involved in the design of theBluebird boats for Sir Malcolm Campbell and the Crusader for John Cobb. In 1939 he went to America as Consultant to the Hudson Motor Company. This plaque erected in 1981 to the memory of a very talented, modest and quiet Engineer by the Railton Owners Club Recorded plaque organisation: Railton Owners Club.
