Redcastle stands on the Black Isle as a roofless shell where William the Lion erected Ederdour in the twelfth century. MacKenzies held it until 1790, yet Rory MacKenzie burned it in 1659 during the Montrose wars. A stone in the northeast wall still bears R.M. and 1641, marking the moment human ambition struck back against the castle that had watched them for generations.
