This blue commemorative plaque records: Lieutenant Commander Edward Courtney Boyle VC, Royal Navy (Later Rear Admiral) Was a member of Sunningdale Golf Club. Awarded the Victoria Cross on 27th April 1915 when in command of HM Submarine E.14. Under threat of enemy attack he negotiated minefields & strong currents to enter the Sea of Marmora, there sinking two Turkish gunboats & the military transport ship Gun Djemal. Edward Courtney Boyle was a distinguished Royal Navy officer who received the Victoria Cross for his daring command of HM Submarine E.14 in 1915, successfully navigating treacherous conditions to sink Turkish vessels in the Sea of Marmora during World War I.
