Devizes Castle began as a wooden motte-and-bailey around 1080, rose into a stone fortress praised as the most beautiful in Europe, and lost its top layers when Parliamentary forces dismantled it in 1648. Its stones went into nearby buildings, so the town still carries the castle inside its walls. The newer structure stands above buried medieval remains, keeping the old castle hidden rather than forgotten.

The National Heritage List for England records Devizes Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Devizes Castle was built by Robert, Count of Mortain, in the 11th century, following the Norman Conquest of England. It is important as a key example of early Norman military architecture and played a strategic role in controlling the surrounding region.
