Lowther Castle is a deliberate sham castle built between 1806 and 1814 for William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, with angle turrets, embattled walls and a forecourt that turn a country house into a toy fortress. It replaced an older hall where Mary, Queen of Scots passed through in 1568, and it later lost its roof, its furniture and much of its certainty before becoming a garden ruin. The wider estate is being rewilded, so the castle now sits inside a living landscape rather than a polished display.
