High Head Castle stands between Carlisle and Penrith as a ruined Georgian house built above a medieval king’s castle first written about in 1272. Rich families including the Richmonds, Broughams, Hills and Cavaghans owned or rented it before fire destroyed most of it in 1956. Now its bare walls, old tower basement and surviving stable yard remain closed and waiting, like a house that has forgotten whether it is still being lived in.
