Brougham Hall is a layered castle house where a thirteenth-century gateway still stands beside rooms enlarged for Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux. It has been divided, rebuilt, gambled away, used for secret tank work during the second world war, and finally pulled back from ruin by volunteers. The courtyard may have echoed with clerks, soldiers, guests and workmen, while the hall itself kept changing hands like a living thing.
