Lidgate Castle and C16 Fortified Manorial Complex

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Five hectares of Suffolk soil still hold the shape of a Tudor house that refused to choose between comfort and fear. Bedrooms and barracks shared one roof there, because certainty had gone scarce and stone was the only language left. You can stand inside that contradiction now: a kitchen warm, a courtyard armed, a life lived halfway between feast and siege.
The National Heritage List for England records Lidgate Castle and C16 Fortified Manorial Complex as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Lidgate Castle was built in the 13th century, with the fortified manorial complex added in the 16th century, and it is remembered for its historical significance as a defended residence reflecting the military and social structures of medieval and early modern England.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
