Lidgate castle is a square earth mound in West Suffolk, probably built during the civil war of King Stephen. A deep ditch still cuts between the mound and the churchyard, while nettles, beech trees and forgotten flint walls choke the entrances. The castle may have been a temporary weapon of local rivalry rather than a grand residence, exposing the violence hidden beneath ordinary Suffolk fields.
