Bury Mount

Bury Mount is a ruined castle mound on the north-eastern edge of Towcester, built soon after the Conquest to control the road between Oxford and Northampton. The Crown raised a tall earthwork above a wet ditch, perhaps covering an older Anglo-Saxon court or Roman gate, then abandoned the defensive role while the manor halls continued to occupy the land. A century of decay, civilian reuse and human neglect reduced the fortress to a tilted garden hill, but the mound still stands where royal power once watched the river crossing.
