Lilbourne Castle was a timber motte and bailey built to control the Oxford Way where it crossed the Avon. Henry III ordered it prostrated in 1218, likely by burning its defences, after it had grown into a larger residence with a second bailey and look-out posts. Sheep still graze the clay earthworks, keeping the mounds visible long after the wood disappeared.
