Midhope Castle is a medieval tower house in West Lothian, Scotland, where conflicting claims and marital transactions kept redirecting its ownership through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It stands beside Midhope Glen, with the burn cutting across the land like a living boundary between rival households. The castle may have begun as a strong rectangular tower, but its rooms and yard would have been familiar to the people named in its disputes: kitchens, halls, chambers and workspaces where ordinary life continued while charters and boundaries were contested elsewhere.
