Wall monument in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny. A semi-circular mural plaque (L 1.28m; Wth 0.83m), composed of fossiliferous limestone. Probably originally part of a composite Renaissance mural monument, commemorating John Archer (d. 1617) and Honor Shee (d. 1619), built into the cross wall constructed 1804 connecting the SW side of the church with the graveyard wall (Carrigan 1905, Vol. 3, 101; Cockerham 2009, 354). It is inscribed in false relief Roman capitals, now largely illegible but was transcribed by Carrigan (1905, Vol. 3, 101) as: PATRICIAE ET ANTIQVAE PROSAPIAE JOANI ARCHER PRAETORIO CIVI DIGNISSIMO PACIS BELLIQVE ARTIB[V]S DE PATRIA OPTIME MERITO ET VXORI HONORIAE SHETHEAE MATRONAE LECTISSIMAE MAERENTE[S] FILII PIGNVS HOC AMORIS POSVERVNT AO.
