Watchtower in Unknown Townland

Watchtower

What is recorded here

Cook Street in Dublin hid a watchtower that vanished before memory could keep it. The tower likely watched the street below, warning residents when danger approached or marking the boundary of a powerful household. It disappeared without a ruin, a marker or a clear account, leaving only a point on a map and a name in a list. What remained was the shape of its absence: a tower so complete in function that it stopped needing to be seen.
The Friends of medieval Dublin map (1978) shows the position of a watch tower site in Cook Street. There are no visible surface remains. Compiled by : Geraldine Stout Date of upload: 23 November 2012
