An ogham stone from Aglish in County Kerry stands beside a tomb in an unknown townland. A second stone from the same place was removed in the mid-19th century and is now in the National Museum of Ireland. The remaining stone bears a cross, arrow-like mark and partial ogham inscription that scholars have studied for what it preserves of a forgotten name and time.
This is the present location of the stone from Aglish, Co. Kerry (KE054-032003-). ‘A cross-inscribed ogham stone, now in the NMI, was removed from the site in the mid-19th century and a 2nd ogham stone (KE054-032004-) remains standing beside one of the tombs. One face of this stone bears a Maltese cross within a circle, beneath which is a spear-or arrow-like motif flanked on either side by a swastika. Two very faint circular marks were noted by Macalister (1945, 137, no. 141) below the stem of the arrow but these are not now evident. The ogham inscription, inverted with respect to the cross, occupies both angles of the same face. Part of the inscription is now missing and the remainder was read by Macalister as: MAQI MAQ(I....O)GGODIKA’. (Cuppage 1986, no. 810)
This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. To access details go to the following website:
