Cross

Ogulla’s holy well in County Roscommon once looked up at a large tree hiding the severed head of a high cross, now preserved in the National Museum of Ireland. The broken stone measured roughly eighty centimetres across and thirty centimetres thick, wearing a large boss on one face and a plainly carved head on the other. People may have visited the well beneath that shadow, drinking water while wondering whether the displaced cross still watched over the living place.
