Church in Unknown

The site of the church of Baliederscolle (Balehedirsgeoil, Ballyhedyrsceoll), which is included in the Papal Taxation List (1302-7) for the diocese of Ardfert (Cal Docs Ire, V, 295) cannot now be identified with certainty. It has been suggested that, as the church is listed under the Deanery of Offerba (the N part of the peninsula), it may have stood at Killcumnaghta (KE036-027002-) (An Seabhac 1939, 278). An entry in the Cal Pap Reg (13, 175), recording the union, in 1484, of 'the rectory of Ballyhedyrsceoll' and 'its perpetually annexed chapel of Leakh' (KE046-011----) to a canonry of Ardfert, indicates however that the church was more likely to have been sited on the S side of the peninsula. The name is glossed as Annascaul by the editor of the latter calendar, but an alternative location at Inch is suggested by Ó Conchúir (1973, 70) on the basis of the connection of that area with the O'Driscolls.
