Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Moyvaghny Castle vanished from the earth before it vanished from memory, leaving only a name and a bare field in County Galway. Donogh Mc Wm McGara held the stones in 1574, perhaps watching rain strike mossy walls or listening for riders on the far road. The castle withdrew into legend while Galway kept its shape, proving that some places occupy imagination rather than soil.
Nolan (1901, 111) records that the castle of 'Moyvaghny', in the barony of Leitrim, was in the possession of 'Donogh Mc Wm McGara' in 1574. Not located. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 5 December 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
