Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Beallanehewle castle stood in Athenry barony when Therle of Clanrie held it in 1574, yet no trace of its walls remains visible today. The name itself resists memory, folding and unfolding like a tongue catching on a stone. Whatever room Therle lived in has vanished into Galway soil, leaving behind only the shape of a possession and the silence where a chimney should still stand.
Nolan (1901, 121) records that the castle of 'Beallanehewle', in the barony of Athenry, was in the possession of 'Therle of Clanrie' in 1574. Not located. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 5 December 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
