Scotney Castle stands in a Kent valley where a ruined medieval tower still rises from a small lake beside the polished house built to replace it. The grounds belong to the National Trust, yet they remain a private residence in parts, with rooms let out to tenants who come and go like ghosts through the gardens. A dinosaur footprint presses up through the quarry soil, and the old castle has served as a stage for Shakespeare and a backdrop for a pop video, proving that the place is at home in more than one century.
