What is recorded here

Indicated is a faded fairy fort on a Monaghan hill, marked only on old maps and hidden beneath grass. It may have been a human home, a boundary marker or a child's climbing ring before becoming a story. The land kept the shape long after the people stopped naming it.

Located at the summit of a small hill. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) with trees on the perimeter is depicted only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and on a revision dated 1858. There are slight traces of a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 30m) defined by slight traces of a fosse at W and N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
