Midden in Townparks (ardee By.)

Midden

What is recorded here

Midden in Townparks (ardee By.) is a medieval kitchen midden hidden beneath Church Hill at Market Street in County Louth. It marks a time when people lived closely together, eating and discarding within steps of one another. The exact depth and richness remain untested, but the name preserves what measurement has not: a place where ordinary life accumulated until it became worthy of remembering.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 A range of medieval kitchen middens is referred to (CLAJ 1928, 255) as having been found just inside the W footpath along Church Hill at Market Street. No archaeological investigation of the site was undertaken.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
