On January 1, 1915, the Provident BM 291, under Captain William Pillar, rescued 70 men from a pinnace after HMS Formidable was torpedoed; this daring rescue in stormy seas highlighted the bravery of the crew including Crewman William Carter, John Clarke, Apprentice Dan Taylor, and Cabin Boy Leonard Pillar.
