May's Folly still rises fifty-three metres above Hadlow, the last visible fragment of a castle that swallowed itself in ambition and vanished in 1951. Walter May began the Gothic house in the late 1780s, his son added the towering lantern in 1838, and later owners kept reinventing the place until demolition took the halls while the tower resisted. It is not a complete castle any longer, but the surviving vertical line makes the missing building easier to imagine: a room, a staircase, a life lived inside the absence.

Hadlow Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Warenne family, later held by the powerful Courtenay Earls of Devon. It is remembered for its strategic position in the Weald of Kent and its association with medieval noble families.
