Tobermochulla — Lahardaun

Holy well

Why this matters

Tobermochulla is associated with Saint Mochulla, a 7th-century Irish monk and bishop, traditionally linked to the founding of monastic sites in County Clare. The well is believed to have curative properties, particularly for eye ailments, and was historically visited as part of pilgrimage traditions involving prayer and the collection of holy water.

What is recorded here

Within a burial ground (CL035-072001-), off-centre to S, on a steep NW-facing slope. Depicted and named ‘Tobermochulla’ on all OS historic mapping. Not visible at ground level. According to local information, the old people use to talk about the holy well, which has dried up now as all the large oak trees in the burial ground have taken up the water.
