Why this matters

Toberboy is traditionally associated with Saint Bui, a lesser-known early Irish saint, and was likely visited for its supposed healing properties, particularly for skin ailments. The well's name, Tobar Buí, reflects a common Irish pattern linking holy wells to their patron saints, though specific folklore or recorded rituals connected to this site are sparse.

What is recorded here

Marked on the 1840-41 and 1914 OS maps as 'Toberboy' (Tobar Buí - yellow well). Situation and Description: This well is a marshy hollow in the corner of a field. The landowner covered it some years ago, but the outline can still be traced. SW of this lies a rath (KE005-070----). Rounds/Legends/Offerings: No tradition survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 889. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013
