Tullamain Castle is a Victorian reinvention built 1835-1838 by Mr. Maher to designs of William Tinsley, deliberate imitation of an ancient castle on ground where a thatched castle owned by Richard Comyn vanished before 1840. Burnt in the turbulent 1920s and rebuilt, it now holds three layers at once: a humble Irish castle remembered in the Civil Survey of 1654-6, a Gothic fantasy made to replace it, and a restored house that survived republican flames.
