Gortmakellis Castle is a four-storey stone tower in South Tipperary, built around the late 1500s or early 1600s to keep intruders out and families safe. Its thick walls, narrow loops and overhead murder-hole show a home designed for danger, yet fireplaces, garderobes and larger upper windows reveal that life inside still craved warmth, ease and light. Edmond Stapleton lived there when surveyors came in 1654, and the castle was still called tentable, meaning someone could have walked in, lit a fire and stayed.
